I have a concealed carry permit, but usually just leave my loaded
45 in my locked vehicle while at work.
Tell me about open carry in Wisconsin. I have a couple of friends who used to live in the Milwaukee area, but they wern't gun fans. from my small bit of research, it seems Wisconsin and Illinois have the worst gun laws I have ever seen,(outside of N.Y.C. and D.C.) with no concealed carry for the average human. Is this right or am I misinformed?
Not many places outside of Arizona allow open carry, do they? The 2nd amendment is trampled on severely in our country. I would so love to openly pack my gun in a drop leg holster.

Even though there is a blanket CCW prohibition, there are few places where you cannot legally carry a firearm loaded and in a visible holster. It's "Vermont style" in that you do not need any permit to carry a gun in WI, and the few places you can't carry are school zones, places that serve liquor, state parks, and government buildings. We are working on changing the fact that you will most likely be harassed by the police, even if you are breaking no laws, though. Interim, I know of others who carry whenever they are in WI from out-of-state, and so far none have been troubled, but it really depends on where you go and whether or not someone makes a "man with a gun" 911 call. There are many states that allow open carry, though it is not often practiced. I do not have a comprehensive list.

Thanks for the response. I do environmental chemistry, mostly instrumental analysis by G.C. or G.C./M.S. following USEPA methods.
An "older" chemist, I am ex-military, a global warming skeptic and a Republican. I have three prolific sons, so I am up to nine grandchildren by now.
Note that any liberal change to the U.S. Supreme Court balance in the recent Second Amendment decision would have screwed us gun owners good. I don't like McCain that much, but will not vote for Obama.
I sometimes exchange witty comments with a conservative chemistry professor in Wisconsin on a blog called "The Autopsy".
